Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Introduction:

A UTI is an infection in any part of the urinary system, most commonly the bladder or urethra.

Symptoms:

Pain or burning during urination, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, lower abdominal discomfort, sometimes fever.

Who it affects:

Most common in women, but can also affect men—especially those with diabetes or urinary tract obstructions.

Diagnosis:

• Urinalysis
• Urine culture
• Ultrasound if infection is recurrent

Treatment Options:

Oral antibiotics

Pain relief medication

Increased fluid intake

Self-Management:

Drink plenty of water

Do not delay urination

Maintain personal hygiene

Wear breathable cotton underwear

Complete the full course of antibiotics
